Legendary champ scores two knockdowns
By Ricardo Trujillo and Chris Cozzone at ringside Four-time former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield (42-8-2,
27 KOs) won an entertaining ten round unanimous decision over Lou Savarese (46-7, 38 KOs) on Saturday night at the Don Haskins
Center in El Paso, Texas. The 44-year-old Holyfield cut Savarese on the forehead (with a punch) in round one and landed some
hard combinations in round two. Savarese landed a good uppercut in round three. Holyfield hurt Savarese with a huge right
hand and battered Savarese to the canvas. Savarese beat the count and survived the round. Holyfield won an uneventful round
five, but Savarese made the bout competitive until Holyfield floored him again with a monster left hook at the end of round
nine. Holyfield had Savarese reeling in the tenth, but Big Lou gamely battled to the end. Holyfield won by scores of 99-87,
98-90, 96-91.
In a battle of unbeaten heavyweight KO artists, local hero David "Nino" Rodriguez (26-0, 25 KOs) demolished Rick Dyer (13-1,
13 KOs). Rodriguez dropped the 6'8, 276-pound Dyer at the end of round one and shortly after another knockdown (more of the
throwdown) in round two, referee Sam Garza waved it off after :45.
Unbeaten featherweight Miguel Roman (22-0, 16 KOs) dealt a five round beat down to Jose Alonso (29-14-2, 14 KOs). Roman put
Alonso on the deck with a body shot at the end of round three and the punishment was finally stopped by referee Jesse Reyes
at 1:29 of round five.
Heavyweight Adam Richards (18-1, 13 KOs) scored a fourth round knockout over Billy Willis (8-11-1, 7 KOs). A short left hook
put Willis down at the :34 mark.
In the opener, unbeaten female super middleweight Akondaye Fountain (7-0-1, 4 KOs) and veteran Kathy Rivers (14-5-2, 5 KOs)
battled to a four round draw. Scores were 40-36 Fountain, 38-38, 38-38.
Junior featherweight Ricky Vasquez (2-0, 1 KO) topped Anthony Mcgee (1-3, 0 KO) over four. Scores were 40-46, 40-36, 40-37.
