The homecoming of hometown hero Jermain Taylor (26-0-1, 17 KOs)
was successful on Saturday night as the WBC/WBA/WBO middleweight champion scored a twelve round unanimous decision against
Kassim Ouma (25-3, 15 KOs) at the Alltel Arena in North Little Rock, Arkansas. Ouma tried to pressure the champion, but Taylor
was usually able to back away and maintain his distance to land by far the harder blows. As a WBC title fight, scores were
announced after rounds four and eight. Taylor was leading 40-36 on all cards after four and 80-72, 80-72, 78-74 after eight.
As a result Ouma knew he needed a knockout going into the last few rounds, but it was not to be as Taylor prevailed 117-111,
Unbeaten 2004 Olympian welterweight Andre Berto (16-0, 14 KOs) looked like a future champion as he outclassed Miguel Figueroa
(24-6-1, 14 KOs) in round six. Berto staggered Figueroa at the end of round one, and was in command the entire fight. Referee
Laurence Cole finally stopped it at 1:59 of round six. Figueroa was extremely game, but Berto was simply at a another level.
Super lightweight Emanuel Augustus (35-28-6, 19 KOs) pitched a ten round shutout against Russell Stoner Jones (19-16, 14 KOs).
Augustus won by scores of 100-89, 100-89, 100-90 to claim the WBC Continental Americas super lightweight championship. After
the fight, Augustus stated, "I'd like to fight the best fighters out there," Augustus said. "I'm an HBO fighter and a very
entertaining fighter. I've had some tough breaks along the way but now things are starting to come my way."
Super middleweight Jaidon Codrington (14-1, 11 KOs) won a six round unanimous decision over Thomas Reid (35-18-1, 13 KOs)
by scores of 59-54 on all cards. Reid was down in round two.
Middleweight Ronald Hearns (11-0, 9 KOs) dropped Robert Smallwood (4-3-2) several times en route to an easy first round TKO
at 2:55 of round one. A complete mismatch. Hearns is the son of ring legend Thomas Hearns.
Arkansas heavyweight Dominick Guinn (27-4-1, 18 KOs) won an eight round split decision over Zack Page (12-9-1, 4 KOs). Guinn
dropped Page in round one with a straight right and took two cards by scores of 77-74 and 79-72. Page, who came in off an
upset win over former champ Lou Del Valle, prevailed 76-75 on the third card.
Heavyweight Terry Smith (29-2-1, 18 KOs) won a unanimous decision over Ramon Hayes (15-22-1, 10 KOs) by scores of 79-73, 79-73,
Light heavyweight Ray Smith (6-0, 2 KOs) outpointed Randy Pogue (8-6-1, 2 KOs) over four by a score of 40-36 on all cards.
